Internet Usage And Access Statistics


Internet usage / access in 2011:
  • 45 per cent of Internet users used a mobile phone to connect to the Internet
  • 6 million people accessed the Internet over their mobile phone for the first time in the previous 12 months
  • The use of wireless hotspots almost doubled in the last 12 months to 4.9 million users
  • 21 per cent of Internet users did not believe their skills were sufficient to protect their personal data
  • 77 per cent of households had Internet access

Internet usage / access in 2009:
  • 18 per cent of adults, both male and female, accessed the internet in the last three months on their mobile phones via GPRS.
  • 94 per cent of people accessed the internet in their homes while only 43 per cent accessed the internet at their place of work.
  • 15 per cent of people accessed the internet at their place of education while 28 per cent accessed the internet in another person's home.
  • 13 per cent of people, both male and female, encountered problems when purchasing over the internet.
The UK's internet usage compared to the rest of the European Union:

        The graph shows that:

  • There are 27 countries in the European Union. 
  • Iceland has the highest internet usage at approximately 95 per cent.
  • Turkey has the lowest internet usage at approximately 35 per cent.
  • The UK has the 8th highest internet usage at approximately 80 per cent.
Internet Access - Households and Individuals in 2012:

  • In 2012, 21 million households in Great Britain (80 per cent) had Internet access, compared with 19 million (77 per cent) in 2011
  • The number of households with Internet access has increased by 7.1 million (23 percentage points) since 2006, when directly comparable records began
  • In 2012, 93 per cent of households with Internet access used a fixed broadband connection, of which 30 per cent used a cable or fibre optic connection
  • Of the 5.2 million households without Internet access, the most common reason for not having a connection was that they 'did not need it' (54 per cent)
  • In 2012, 67 per cent of adults in Great Britain used a computer every day

Internet Access - Households and Individuals in 2009:

  • In 2009, 18.31 million households in Great Britain had internet access.
  • This represented 70 per cent of households and an increase of 1.85 million households since 2008.
  • These estimates are derived from the 2009 National Statistics Opinions (Omnibus) Survey.
  • Of all UK households, 63 per cent (16.5 million) had a broadband connection in 2009, an increase from 56 per cent in 2008.
  • The number of all households with broadband has increased by 6.6 million since 2006.
  • Of those households with internet access, 90 per cent had a broadband connection in 2009, an increase from 69 per cent in 2006.
Households with access to the internet and broadband:

  • In 2006, 57 per cent of households had internet access and 40 per cent had broadband.
  • In 2007, 61 per cent of households had internet access and 51 per cent had broadband.
  • In 2008, 65 per cent of households had internet access and 56 per cent had broadband.
  • In 2009, 70 per cent of households had internet access and 63 per cent had broadband.
Percentage of households in the UK with access to the internet, between the years of 1998 to 2004:

        The table shows that:

  • No households had internet access in 1998 between the months of January to March.
  • By October to December of 2004, the total number of households with access to the internet, (52 per cent), had multiplied by almost 6 since October-December in 1998, (9 per cent).
